Quality in a project doesn't mean luxury or "the best possible". It means how well the output meets the agreed requirements and is fit for purpose. An economy car that works reliably as promised is high quality, even if it isn't luxurious.
So quality must be distinguished from grade: grade describes the level of features (basic or premium), while quality describes how free of defects the output is and how well it meets what was asked. A low-grade product may be acceptable; a low-quality product is always a problem.
Quality Assurance focuses on the process: are we working in a way that prevents errors in the first place? Quality Control focuses on the output: inspecting what was produced to confirm it meets the standards and to find defects.
A core principle: preventing errors is far cheaper than finding and fixing them later. The later a defect is found, especially after delivery to the customer, the more it costs to fix.
💡 Key points
- Quality = meeting requirements and fitness for purpose, not luxury.
- Quality assurance is about the process; quality control is about the output.
- Prevention is cheaper than inspection, and inspection is cheaper than fixing defects at the customer.
🌍 Real-life example
A bakery takes a wedding cake order. Quality assurance: a documented recipe and precisely weighed ingredients. Quality control: tasting a sample and checking the look before delivery. Catching a misspelled name before delivery is far cheaper than at the reception.
