Stakeholders are any individual, group, or organization that may affect, be affected by, or perceive itself to be affected by the project. That includes the customer, the sponsor, the team, end users, suppliers, and even regulators or neighbors.
Many projects fail not because of technical issues, but because an important stakeholder was not consulted or informed, and objected late.
The first step is to identify stakeholders early and record them in a stakeholder register. Then analyze them: how much power do they have, and how interested are they? Those with high power and high interest should be managed closely; those with low power and low interest just need monitoring.
Stakeholder engagement is ongoing throughout the project, not a single kick-off meeting, because interests and attitudes change.
💡 Key points
- Identify stakeholders early; late discovery is expensive.
- Analyze them by power and interest to decide how to engage each.
- Engagement and communication continue for the whole project.
🌍 Real-life example
A project to build a car park in a residential area. If the residents are ignored, they may complain to the municipality and halt the project. Engaging them early, for example by sharing the hours of noisy work, avoids that.
